In his notebook, Fugard refers to Sam Semela, whom is one of the characters in his play. He takes trusted qualities and experiences from him and the events that they shared and brings them together in the play. Fugard merges the political with the ad hominem nigh poignantly when Hally and Sam recount their different experiences of the equal event. (Elizabeth high dudgeon (2000: 11)) Dudgeon here talks of the kite-flying event. The kite is symbolic of the personal relationship between Hally and Sam. Kite flying would under natural circumstances be considered to be a father and son activity. Hallys father is not fall in in the play and the on-stage interaction between Sam and Hally emphasises the off-stage relationship between H ally and his biologic father.
